Baku-hubbed Silk Way West Airlines has flown 116 yaks from Kyrgyzstan to Azerbaijan as part of a breeding programme.
The yaks made the 2,000 km journey on Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft flying from Bishkek Manas International Airport to Ganja Airport.
The yaks were accommodated in custom-designed crates that provided protection from injury and stress.
The aircraft was equipped with advanced ventilation and temperature control systems to maintain an optimal environment throughout the journey, the airline said.
Upon arrival, the yaks were carefully transported by truck to their new homes in the pastures of Kalbajar.
The transport operation was conducted at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan as part of a breeding programme in Kalbajar.
Silk Way West Airlines vice president CIS and Central Asia Vugar Mammadov said: “We are honoured to support sustainable agriculture and biodiversity through expert handling and transportation of live animals.
“This collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture underscores our commitment to enhancing local ecosystems and contributing to global sustainability efforts.”
The airline said that it had a history of transporting animals, including the movement of alpacas, kangaroos, dogs, horses and European bison.
