Gasum, a Nordic gas sector and energy market expert, and Equinor are partnering on a significant bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane) initiative at the Port of Dusavik in Stavanger, Norway.
The collaboration involves fueling Equinor’s chartered platform supply vessel, Island Crusader, with ISCC-EU-certified, mass-balanced bio-LNG.
The initial delivery of bio-LNG took place successfully in mid-July, with Gasum scheduled to supply Island Crusader with 2–3 truckloads of bio-LNG approximately every two weeks. Each truckload contains around 22 tons of bio-LNG.
Both companies are dedicated to ambitious sustainability objectives, with Equinor aiming to become a net-zero emissions energy provider by 2050. The bio-LNG deliveries are a step towards this goal.
Furthermore, Biogas is a fully renewable and eco-friendly fuel, with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are typically 90% lower than those from fossil fuels. It is suitable for a variety of applications, including road and maritime transport, as well as industrial energy needs.
The Island Crusader also incorporates battery hybrid technology, enhancing its environmental benefits.
Biogas production contributes to the circular economy, utilizing waste feedstocks such as biowaste, sewage sludge, and manure. The by-products of biogas production are nutrient-rich and can be recycled for use in agriculture and industry.
In addition, Gasum aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy by offering 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, including biomethane and e-methane. Achieving this goal would result in a combined reduction of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide per year for Gasum’s customers.
Gasum provides bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies with LNG-powered vessels, as LNG and bio-LNG are fully interchangeable and can be blended in any ratio.
