Freighter operator Cargolux and trucking firm Arthur Welter are teaming up to test out the use of a hydrogen-powered truck to transport air cargo.
The two companies will work together on a two-year trial using a hydrogen truck to transport cargo between Luxembourg and Frankfurt five times per week.
The vehicle has been adapted to meet the requirements of air cargo and boasts a range of approximately 400 km.
The truck will be re-fuelled on both ends of the journey as hydrogen fuelling facilities are currently scarce in the region.
Both parties say the initiative will serve as a “milestone in decarbonising operations”.
“When Cargolux initiated this project, our long-standing partner Arthur Welter was a natural choice for collaboration,” said Cargolux president and chief executive Richard Forson.
“Our companies have been working together for many years and this project reflects our shared ambition for the future of our industry.
“This initiative aims to showcase the opportunities that exist and prove that they can be adapted to a dynamic sector like air cargo. We look forward to witnessing the success of this endeavor and hopefully building on it in the future.”
Arthur Welter Transports chief executive Viviane Welter added: “Although we are aware that we have to perform pioneering work in hydrogen mobility, we are confident that we can lead the way towards the energy transition in our sector.”
