Dees will join the event’s third session, “Sustainable technologies: Sustainable fuels, electric and other ways to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint,” on Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m. CET. Panelists will discuss:
Global sustainable aviation fuel developments; Methods and tech for decarbonization, including hydrogen, electric and solar; and Regulations and government incentives crucial to sustainability.
Founded in 2019, New York-based Carbon Direct has developed a science-based approach to measuring data to assist clients with decarbonization targets. The data company also provides expertise in policy, commercial markets and technology.
“SAF [sustainable aviation fuel] is one of the few near-term options to decarbonize aviation,” Dees told Air Cargo Next. “However, SAF is not monolithic, and a broader set of feedstocks and conversion technologies will be needed to meet ambitious targets. A focus on the sustainability of feedstocks and production methods can ensure the credibility of SAF. First-of-a-kind projects need the sustained support of policy and secure offtake to scale and meet demand.”
Dees has worked at Carbon Direct for more than three years, rising to the position of senior decarbonization scientist in March 2023. Before that, he worked as a graduate student researcher at University of California, Berkeley’s Carbon Removal Lab.
In his master’s thesis, he investigated interest-group politics in state-level renewable energy policy. His doctoral work focused on the intersection of industrial ecology and climate economics. In his dissertation, Dees used life cycle and techno-economic assessment methods to assess the potential for bio-based products and fuels to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
While working toward his doctorate, Dees collaborated with the Energy Systems team at Lawrence Livermore National Lab to quantify the technical and economic potential for low-carbon ethanol, SAF and carbon removal in the broader bioeconomy.
