Challenge Group has marked a major achievement by registering Europe’s first Boeing 777-300 Extended Range Special Freighter (ERSF) also called the ‘Big Twin’ under the 9H Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
The ‘Big Twin’ conversion programme, was launched by AerCap in partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries Group (IAI).
Challenge Group has placed a firm order with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for four Boeing 777-300ERSF aircraft. This year, Challenge Group plans to commence 777-300ERSF operations by adding two units to the AOC of its Malta-based subsidiary, Challenge Airlines MT. The airline is expected to be the first European operator of the new freighter type.
Challenge Group operates a fleet of 10 aircraft, including 6 Boeing 747-400Fs and 4 Boeing 767-300Fs. Last year, the group expanded its network by introducing new destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Nairobi, Dubai, and Milan, alongside its existing routes to New York, Atlanta, Houston, Hong Kong, and Zhengzhou.
According to Challenge Group, it handles 300,000 tonnes of cargo annually. This Boeing 777-300ERSF is leased from AerCap. However, the ‘Big Twin’ programme is still awaiting STC certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other regulatory agencies. The certification process has significantly delayed the aircraft’s market entry, and Kalitta Air, the first customer, has yet to receive its delivery.
