Connecticut is spending $31 million to fix the problem of truck parking. This new project is going to add over 180 new parking spaces across the state.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is the government agency that looks after transportation safety, has called the lack of truck parking a “national safety concern.” Truck drivers are often forced to park in unsafe spots because there aren’t enough designated parking spaces available for them. This causes problems not only for truckers but also for other drivers on the road.
It’s not just Connecticut that’s facing this issue. Across the United States, truck parking is a huge problem, and it’s getting worse. According to the American Trucking Association (ATA), nearly 98% of truck drivers have had to make the tough choice between parking in unsafe spots or breaking the law by violating hours-of-service rules.
Connecticut’s Department of Transportation (DOT) is jumping in to help solve this issue with a $31 million project that will create new truck parking spaces at several locations across the state. These new spaces will be in places like Middletown, Madison, Southington, Southbury, and Vernon, and the project should add more than 180 new spaces by the end of the decade.
The first phase of the project is already underway at the Middletown rest area on Interstate 91 northbound. They’re adding 11 new parking spaces costing more than $3 million, and it’s expected to be finished by September. In addition to the new parking spots, the project will also improve drainage and stormwater management at the rest area so the area stays safe and functional for a long time.
The problem isn’t just about safety, though. Truckers also lose a lot of money because of the lack of parking. The ATA says that on average, truck drivers spend about 56 minutes every day looking for a parking spot, and that adds up to $5,600 a year. That’s time they could be spending getting their jobs done and earning money.
The ATA predicts that over the next decade, trucks will be responsible for moving 2.4 billion more tons of freight than they do today. That means more trucks on the road and even more need for parking. As e-commerce continues to grow, the demand for trucking services is also expected to rise, which will only make the parking problem worse if something isn’t done about it.
John McAvoy, who works for the Federal Highway Administration’s Connecticut Division, mentioned that e-commerce growth will drive more truckloads, making this issue even more urgent. Connecticut’s freight transportation system supports over 451,000 jobs and contributes $50.5 billion annually to the state’s economy.
This project is a step in the right direction for improving the lives of truck drivers and making the roads safer for everyone.
